In order to prevent misinterpretations of the various ANS parameters, guidelines for performing and interpreting ANS analyses (HRV measurements) were issued in 1996 by the:

ANS Analysis and HRV Analysis - Evidence-Based Diagnostics
- Since July of 2011, HRV/ANS analysis has been part of the Curriculum for Special Pain Therapy at the Hannover Medical School
- Since August 2011 it has been included as a basic diagnostic technique in the evidence-based German Disease Management Guidelines
